The Power of Food — Teacher Guide
Directions
In this assignment, students will use their knowledge of the number system to work on a patient case study typical for a registered dietitian.
Group Work
Students will work in groups to:
- examine the patient’s weight loss and/or gain over the course of the study;
- answer questions about the weight changes;
- determine a meal plan based on caloric recommendation; and
- observe total calorie intake and utilization as a result of healthy eating and exercise.
Verify the accuracy of the group work before students begin the individual work.
Materials Needed
Each group will select one of the two case studies that are available online. After making their selections, each student will need a copy of the appropriate Registered Dietitian worksheet.
A Caloric Guide is available online to assist students in planning meals. Teachers may opt to have students use the internet to research the caloric value of foods rather than use the Caloric Guide.
Final Report
Individually, students will answer questions about:
- different patients who are part of their caseload as a registered dietitian; and
- calories consumed and burned and weight loss and gain to prove knowledge of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing rational numbers.
Students should have access to their worksheets from group work as they complete the final report.
